Michael (Mike) Holmgren



Born: June 15, 1948

-- August 19, 1999 -- On January 11, 1992, Packers General Manager Ron Wolf announced the hiring of Mike Holmgren as the teams coach. He was the 11th coach in all taking over for Lindy Infante. Wolf, himself a relative newcomer to the Packers sought a proven winner to lead his new Green & Gold. Wolf first considered Chuck Know, the "Ground Chuck" but canceled an interview with him when he found out Parcells was available after Parcell's turned down Tampa Bay. So the next guy was Mike, an assistant coach with the San Fran 49er's. Packer
                        
                         fans couldn't of been more pleased to have him. In his first year Holmgren energized his team and found a new young QB in Brett Favre. In his first 3 years as coach the Packers were 9-7. Since then they have never looked back at there climb to new Super Bowls, one a victory over New England.
Coach Homlgren got his start in coaching at San Francisco's Lincoln High School in 1971. From there he moved on to Sacred Heart High and then OakGrove High until 1980. In 1981, Holmgren he moved up to college at San Fran State University and the next year at Brigham Young. There he managed and work with his current foe in Steve Young. In 1984 BYU won its first national championship. So there came the jump to the Pro's. He started out with the 49er's as QB coach and worked with the likes of Joe Montana and then backup Steve Young. In 1989 he was promoted to offensive coordinator. In that year the 49er's lead the NFL in total offense yardage. In 1992, he came over to the Packers and the stats can only tell you how much of an impact he made her. His contract is signed also for a bright future for the Packers.

-- Jan 11, 2000 -- Named to his current position as the Seahawks Executive Vice President of Football Operations/General Manager & Head Coach on January 8, 1999. In addition to his coaching duties, Holmgren will oversee all facets of the team's football operations including scouting, personnel, salary cap, player negotiations, as well as regular coaching responsibilities. Holmgren takes control of the Seahawks following one of the most successful coaching stints in league history as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 1992-98 that included a 75-37 (.670) regular season record, a 9-5 (.643) post-season mark, and two Super Bowl appearances, including a 35-21 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI played in New Orleans. By winning at least one game in five consecutive post-seasons (1993-97) Holmgren joined John Madden (1973-77) as the only coaches in league history to accomplish the feat.

      Off the field, Holmgren serves as co-chair of the NFL's influential Competition Committee along with Buccaneers general manager Rich McKay, having taken over for Don Shula in 1996. Mike and his wife, Kathy, have four daughters-married twins Calla and Jenny (9/27/73), Emily (1/21/77) and Gretchen (7/14/81).
